Stocks rise on thursday, as Novo delivers an astounding quarter

US stocks rose on Thursday as the S&P 500 hit a new record high closing at $ 5,157.36 with an increase of 1.03%. On the other side techs took the lead with the NASDAQ gaining as much as 1.5% and the Dow Jones gained about 1.3%.

Shares of portfolio holding Novo Nordisk (NVO) surged over 10% on Thursday to a new record high. The company saw its global market cap ranking rise to 12th, overtaking Tesla.

General optimism is the result of the reveal by the company that a Phase I trial of the pill version of the experimental drug amycretin showed 13.1% loss of weight in participants after 12 weeks. At the end of the day shares were up 8.95%. (Y.Zhan)

Shares of Avangrid (AGR) rose 13% on Thursday, after the gas and renewable energy provider announced that it has received a proposal from its majority stakeholder Iberdrola.

The company announced that it has received a non-binding proposal from electric utility giant Iberdrola to acquire all issued and outstanding common shares for a total of $2.49 billion.

The shares at the end of the trading day were up 12.97%. (S.Symington)

Shares of Kroger (KR) popped 9.9% on Thursday after the grocery store chain announced important fourth-quarter results and better-than-expected forward guidance. Total company sales grew 6.4% year-to-year to $37.06 billion with net earnings of $1.34 per share or 1.14$ excluding a $0.20 per share benefit from the extra week, while analysts were modeling $1.13 per share on roughly the same revenue. At the end of the day the stock was up 9.88%. (S.Symington)
